Key Verse:  1 Samuel 16:7--"The LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart."

Hold up a picture of a boy and a girl (just random children, not children the students would know).  Discuss how we can only see the outside of a person.  We can't see or know their thoughts.  We cannot see if they are saved or unsaved; we can only observe their actions.  We cannot see whether or not the Holy Spirit lives in them.  Every saved person has the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:9; 1 Cor. 6:19-20).  Only God can see past the outward appearance and into the heart. He knows our hearts.

For the object lesson bring out two eggs. One is a raw egg and the other is a hard boiled egg. Make sure the eggs look alike (both brown eggs or both white eggs).  Tell the students that one is cooked and one is not.  How can we tell which is which?  Label the eggs:  Egg A and Egg B.  Have the students each guess which one is the raw egg.  Point out that it is very hard to tell because we can only see the outside of the eggs and they both look alike.  We can't see what is in the egg.

The teacher will then demonstrate that there is a way to tell.  Take the hard boiled egg, large end down, and spin it like a top. It will spin really well (the teacher may need to practice a little at home, but it's not very hard to give it a good spin).  Then spin the raw egg and right away it will fall over and stop spinning because all the loose liquid in the egg splashes around and keeps the egg from spinning.  It's a fun experiment.
