Coins and Bills and Presidents!

Have five children volunteer.  In a basket have five envelopes. 

The first envelope contains a penny and a five dollar bill.

The second contains a nickel. 

The third contains a dime. 

The fourth contains a quarter and a dollar bill. 

The fifth contains a 20 dollar bill.   Have each child pick an envelope. 

 

Have the children open the envelopes and hold the money in their hands.

The children will hold up each coin or bill at the appropriate time (when asked to do so).

Involve the congregation by asking them which person is on each coin or bill.


1) Which person is pictured on the penny and on the five dollar bill?

Lincoln.

Then share the following quote by Lincoln: “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book. But for it we could not know right from wrong.”


2) Which person is portrayed on the nickel?

Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson is recognized as the key author of the Declaration of Independence which says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”

Jefferson also said this: “God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever.”


3) Which person is portrayed on the dime? (the congregation had a hard time with this one)

Franklin Roosevelt.

I have to be honest and say that it was not easy to find quote from Roosevelt regarding the Bible and God. However, when Pearl Harbor was attacked, Roosevelt, in his address to the nation, acknowledged that it would be impossible to win the war against Japan apart from the help of God.


4) Which person is portrayed on the quarter and on the one dollar bill?

Washington

For years, I have heard this quote attributed to George Washington: “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.” However, certain atheistic websites are claiming that there is no evidence that Washington ever said this. However, if we could bring Washington back from the dead and read to him that quote, I’m sure he would heartily agree with it and perhaps even say, “Isn’t that something I once said?”

At any rate, here is what Washington did say in his will: “Most humbly desiring forgiveness from Almighty God, my Saviour and Redeemer in Whom and by the merits of Jesus Christ, I trust and believe assuredly to be saved and to have full remission and forgiveness of all my sins.”


5) Which person is portrayed on the twenty dollar bill?

(Some people had trouble with this one also).

Andrew Jackson

Once when Jackson heard a man mocking the Bible and defaming God’s Word, he said, “Sir, that Book is the Rock on which our Republic rests.”
 

Some of our greatest Presidents had great respect for God, and His Word the Bible.

The one in charge can decide whether the children should keep the money or not!
