Trying To Do My Best (Dentist)

(Bring appropriate tools)

I want to be a dentist. But I don't see a need to go to dental school. Taking care of teeth isn't that hard. It's a cinch! For example, if you want to remove a tooth, just take these pliers and pull real hard

And what's so hard about drilling a hole? (Use electric drill.)

And to clean the stuff out from between the teeth, here is a hack saw blade that would work just fine (works much better than floss).  It gets right down to the gums.

And if I need to fill a cavity, I have this "Ultimate Glue" by Elmers. It is waterproof, bonds virtually to any material.  You can paint or stain it (just paint it white to match the other teeth). This glue is industrial strength and works great.

So what's so hard about being a dentist?

One day a Christian man was sitting in a dentist chair. He was concerned for his dentist's soul, so he looked for a chance to share with him about Christ. It's hard to witness in a dentist chair because your mouth is so full of stuff, but in between procedures this man was able to share a few things about how the Lord Jesus had saved him and made it possible for him to be right with God. The dentist answered nonchalantly, "Well, I just do my best, and that's good enough for me. I'm sure God will accept me if I do my best."

The Christian man didn't say any more until after his appointment was over and a teenager got into the dentist chair after him. The Christian man said to the dentist, "Do you mind if I take care of your next patient. I'd like to fill his cavity." The dentist said, "You've got to be kidding. You are not a dentist. You've had no training. I'd have to be crazy to let you near one of my patients." "But sir, I promise you that I will do my best. Isn't that good enough for you?"

The dentist got the point. The Christian man doing his best and trying his hardest would not be good enough to help the teenager with a cavity. So also the dentist trying to do his best before God would never be acceptable to God. No one can get right with God by trying his best. Our best is not good enough. The only thing that God will accept is the work of Jesus Christ. God did His best for you.

I know I'm a sinner, and Christ is my need.
His death is my ransom, no merit I plead.
His work is sufficient; on Him I believe.
I have life eternal when HIM I receive.
