Every child God has made is special, but every child is different.  What kind of world would it be if we all looked exactly alike or if we all had the same talents?  God has made us all different, with different abilities and talents.  Some things we can do well and some things we can do not so well.  Some do very well with music but not so well with athletics.  Others do very well with art but not so well with arithmetic.  We all have our strong points and our weak points.

When a person believes on the Lord Jesus Christ, he is saved (Acts 16:31) and becomes a member of the body of Christ (the Church).  Every member of the Church is given a special gift by God so that we might help and encourage other believers in the Church.  See 1 Corinthians chapter 12 which illustrates this well.  See also this devotional: Humor in 1 Corinthians 12 (the importance of every member).

To illustrate these truths we can use kitchen utensils which all the children are familiar with.  Start with the knife, fork and spoon. You would not want to use the fork when you are having soup!  The spoon is useless when you need to cut meat and the knife doesn't do very well in picking up peas from your plate!  Each utensil has its purpose and function. There are things each utensil can do very well and other things it can't do well at all.  If you want to spread butter, which would you use?  If you want to eat cereal, which would you use?  If you wish to pick up a piece of cake, which would you use?  If you are having ice cream in a bowl, which utensil would you want?

Next show a potato peeler and a can opener.  You can demonstrate the peeler by using it on a carrot.  Ask the children:  Is it good to use a can opener to peel a carrot?   Is it good to use a peeler to open a can of peas?

Have a nut cracker and a pizza cutter.  [You can demonstrate the nut cracker on the carrot; it will snap it right in two.]  Would you want to cut your pizza with a nut cracker?  Would you want to crack a walnut shell with a pizza cutter?  Such examples are humorous but they make the point. 

Next show a pancake flipper and a measuring cup.  They each have their function, but how hard would it be to flip a pancake with a measuring cup?   How hard would it be to measure flour on a pancake flipper?

Yes, God has a purpose and function for each one of us in the body of Christ.  May we grow in the Lord and stay in close fellowship with Him so that He can use us in whatever ways He should choose!
